  • Lonely Planet – Ethiopia, Djibouti & Somaliland

It was founded by Maureen and Tony Wheeler who embarked on an overland trip through Europe and Asia in 1972, resulting in their first publication, a 94-page stapled booklet entitled “Across Asia on the Cheap”. The company name is inspired by lyrics in “Space Captain”, a song by Matthew Moore and popularized by Joe Cocker and Leon Russell. Tony Wheeler heard “lonely planet”, whereas the actual lyrics are “lovely planet”. The company sold 120 million books as of 2011 and by early 2014 it had sold around 11 million units of its travel apps. We are proud to be recommended in the Lonely Planet: Ethiopia, Djibouti & Somaliland guidebook.
